LeaseJava: built, scaled and sold

Published 22 September 2026.

Acuvity Consulting co-developed LeaseJava, a software-as-a-service platform for lease accounting calculations. Venkat Avasarala, Founder & CEO of Acuvity Consulting, built it with Michael Cheng, a partner at Frazier & Deeter. Caseware acquired LeaseJava in January 2025.

What LeaseJava does

LeaseJava automates the calculations behind lease accounting, the work of applying the lease standards to each contract and producing figures that hold up in an audit. Caseware described it as “a software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution designed and developed by leasing standards experts” whose purpose is “automation of complex lease accounting calculations, ensuring precision and simplification”.

Who built it

The idea came from Michael Cheng, a partner in the assurance and advisory practice at Frazier & Deeter, previously a senior project manager at the Financial Accounting Standards Board and, from January 2023, a member of the Private Company Council. In Caseware’s announcement he said: “I co-developed LeaseJava to solve the issues I was experiencing with lease computations along with Venkat Avasarala, Partner and CEO of Acuvity Consulting. He played a key role in its development, providing strategic leadership and expertise that were instrumental in shaping the platform’s growth and success.” (“Partner and CEO” was his title at the time.)

Venkat Avasarala served as LeaseJava’s Chief Technology Officer and Chief Operating Officer from 2021 until the acquisition closed.

From idea to acquisition

  • 2021: work starts on the platform, with Frazier & Deeter as partners.
  • Within 18 months: LeaseJava reaches profitability.
  • January 2025: Caseware, a provider of cloud audit, financial reporting and data analytics software, announces the acquisition. The announcement was made on 7 January 2025.

Why this matters for clients

Most consulting firms advise on products. Acuvity Consulting has also built one, run it and sold it, which is the same path a client faces when deciding whether to build a product: decide what to build, prove it earns its place, and keep it running for real users. That experience is the basis of MVP Spark™, the firm’s feasibility-first program that takes leaders from an idea to a build-ready MVP blueprint and a clear decision to proceed, adjust or stop.
